Day by Day Itinerary for the 10 Day self-drive Namibia Safari

Day 1: Windhoek

On arrival in Windhoek our representative will meet you and take you to the car rental place to collect your vehicle. From there you drive to your accommodation in Windhoek. Your trip consultant will discuss your tour and answer any questions you may have.

Guest House Windhoek

Overnight at your accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2: Okaukuejo Campsite, Etosha South

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before travelling to Etosha National Park where you will stay at Okaukuejo Campsite inside the park.

Before you depart Windhoek you will need to stop at a super market to shop for groceries and supplies. Your journey takes you north of Windhoek. The next town  is Okahandja which is about an hour drive from Windhoek,. Here you will have the opportunity to stop at the local craft market for some souvenir shopping before you proceed to Otjiwarongo.

Otjiwarongo will be the best place to stop for a quick lunch. From here  you drive toward Outjo and on to  Etosha. You will enter the park at the Anderson gate, (entrance fee not included) and check-in at Okaukuejo Campsite.

Etosha Camp Site

Depending on your arrival time, you might have a chance to go for an afternoon game drive on your own or simply just go to the famous floodlit waterhole for afternoon game viewing.

The main attraction of this camp is that it overlooks a permanent waterhole which is floodlit at night. Here a wide diversity of wildlife congregate and interact from lion to rhino to elephant and antelope. The spectacle starts at dawn, with animals coming in large numbers to quench their thirst. The activity continues throughout the day until late at night. In the early evenings, it is not uncommon to have black rhino, elephant and lion all drinking at the same time.

Wildlife Etosha Waterhole

Overnight is camping. Meal plan is self-catering.

Day 3: Etosha South

An early departure is recommended  for your full day self-drive safari. Game drive your way to Halali, stopping at the different waterholes in the park. You can enjoy your lunch at Halali Camp before your afternoon game drive  back to Okaukuejo. The area is rich in wild-life that includes lion, giraffe, elephant, white and black rhino, and a multitude of plains game

If you don't wish to self-drive there are scheduled game drives you can book.. Popular activities include: game drives, tracking rhinos on foot, guided nature walks, or watching the sunset over the magnificent African landscape.

Overnight at your camp-site. Meal plan self-catering.

Day 4: Spitzkoppe

Today your journey takes you into the dramatic Damaraland where you have the opportunity of a  wonderful cultural experience with the Himba poeple.  Then travel further to Spitzkoppe and check in at camp.

Camping Namibia

Spitzkoppe are a group of bald granite peaks forming one of Namibia’s most recognizable and dramatic landmarks. These enormous towering domes are a mecca for hikers and mountaineers, from beginners interested in guided historic walks to professional climbers seeking an adrenaline boost. Numerous ancient rock paintings can be visited as part of a guided walking tour. The extreme, barren landscapes and striking rock formations create an excellent setting for photography

You will be based here for the next day exploring the area on your own.  There will be plenty of time to explore the area, this afternoon as well as the next morning.

Overnight at campsite. Meal plan: self-catering.

Day 5: Spitzkoppe to Swakopmund

This morning you will have some more time to explore the Spitzkoppe, before departing on an easy 3 hour drive to Swakopmund.  Check in at Plaza hotel.

There are several optional activities on offer. Perhaps take part in a marine cruise, kayak, sky dive or quad bike. Alternatively, a highly recommended option is a trip to Sandwich Harbour.

Sandwich Harbor Swakopmund

or perhaps a scenic flight over the dunes and coastline where you will see dunes falling into the ocean, a shipwreck 200m inland and of course, the dunes of Sossusvlei region.

Overnight in hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 6: Swakopmund

Enjoy a hearty breakfast and spend the rest of the day partaking in activities.

Activities can be booked in advance. There is a safe beach for swimming, an interesting aquarium and museum or you may want to sit back and relax with a coffee and cake and watch the world go by.

Recommended activities include a trip to Sandwich Harbor, a boat cruise or a scenic flight over the desert.

A scenic flight over the Namib Desert is unforgettable. See how the seldom present waters of the Kuiseb River stop the advance of the red sands of the Namib, experience the vastness of the magnificent dune formations as you fly south to Sossusvlei and then return along the coast where you will see dunes falling into the ocean, pass over long gone mining settlements, lonely shipwrecks, seal colonies, colourful salt works, Windhoek Harbour and finally back to Swakopmund.

Overnight in hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 7: Sossusvlei, Sesriem

After breakfast, drive through the Namib Desert via the Kuiseb Pass and Solitaire, arriving at your accommodation in the afternoon.  Check in at lodge after which you will have some time to relax and enjoy the views before dinner. Pool and bar available. Overnight at lodge. Meal Plan: Dinner and breakfast.

Day 8: Sossusvlei, Sesriem

Your accommodation is a minute drive to the gate. After breakfast, drive to the gate at sunrise to enter the park (entrance fees not included) . Drive down an ancient river bed surrounded by towering dunes to the 2x4 parking. From here you take a 4x4 shuttle into the Sossusvlei area to appreciate the beauty of this place in early morning light and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the region.

Sossusvlei-Namibia

Explore this unique area on foot before heading into Dead Vlei with its large expanse of bleached cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees, contrasting with a backdrop of huge dunes with their ever-changing colors before taking the 4x4 shuttle back to our vehicle.

As you drive back to our accommodation you can stop at the famous Dune 45 and climb this dune if you wish or just wander around the base. You return to Sesriem and visit the nearby Sesriem Canyon, one of the few permanent water sources.

Sesriem Canyon

Overnight at lodge. Meal plan: Dinner and Breakfast.

Day 9: Windhoek

After a lovely buffet breakfast,  leave the desert and embark upon your journey back to Windhoek where you have your final night at the Galton house or similar. Dinner at Joes Beer House is recommend on this night or otherwise stay in and enjoy your dinner at your accommodation.

Day 10: Flight home

After breakfast return vehicle to rental company. You will then be transferred to the airport for your outbound flight.
