The Cradle of Humankind is located in the Gauteng Province about 50km northwest of Johannesburg. The site occupies around 53 000 hectares( 530 sq km] and is home to a network of limestone caves, including the famous Sterkfontein Caves.
These dolomitic limestone caves contain the fossilised remains of ancient life forms and include remains of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The site was was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1999. This fun-filled full day tour starts at the Maropeng Visitors Centre. Read up on the facts about the evolution of the world and especially humankind, explained in an interactive way.See fossils, learn how humankind evolved, view stone tools up to 1-million years old, take a ride through the ‘ice age’ or buy a typical souvenir at one of the market stalls and the curio shop.
Maropeng is fun and informative for young and old alike! From Maropeng we proceed to the Visitors Centre of the Sterkfontein Caves, where a permanent hominid exhibition is displayed. Palaeontologists and archaeologists consider this to be one of the top archaeological sites in the world. A tour into the caves is included!
