Victoria Falls Facts

Based on its width and height the Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall and greatest curtain of falling water on Earth and certainly the most impressive. The falls are a mile wide (1.7km) and drop an astonishing 360 feet (108 meters).  Dr. David Livingstone gave the falls this royal name, naming it after the reigning British Queen of the time, Queen Victoria.  The local Kololo people call it Mosi-oa-Tunya in their Lozi language, meaning “smoke that thunders”. Seen from great vantage points the Vic Falls presents a spectacular and breathtaking sight of magnificent beauty  and majestic splendor on the Zambezi River. From miles away you can see columns of spray as millions of cubic meters of water cascade over the 2 km edge and plummet into the gorge hundreds of feet below. After Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain in 1964 they changed all the street and city names but never changed the name of the falls. In fact they established a town at the falls also called Victoria Falls. This was partly due to their great respect for the Scottish explorer, David Livingstone.   The Victoria Falls is fed by the mighty Zambezi River and is located on the border    between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Travelers can access the falls either through  Livingstone, Zambia or Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. We prefer the Zimbabwe option as it offers a better view and you don’t have to worry  about yellow fever vaccinations.  During our 7 or 11 Day Victoria Falls tour we use the town of  Victoria Falls as our base camp.
