Day by Day Itinerary for 12 Day Mozambique Tropical Tour

Day 1 : Depart from South Africa to Mozambique

We meet you at a pre-arranged pick up point. Our tour kicks off with a drive from the top of the plateau down to the town of Nelspruit.  We then drive to the border of Mozambique, passing the southern point of the Kruger National Park. En route we stop for breakfast, lunch and at selected places so you can stretch your legs, use restrooms and so on.  After the border formalities, we will make our way up to beautiful Bilene, a small town surrounded by inland lakes.

Day 2 : Getting to know Bilene

We start the day with an early morning swim in the clear waters of the inland lake. After our refreshing swim we enjoy a scrumptious breakfast, after which you can relax on the beach at our campsite. Your guide will organize you a boat trip across the inland lake to the beaches of the Indian Ocean after which your local guide will then take you for a walk along the beach to one of the spots where you might be lucky enough to observe the Hawksbill and Green Turtles which make the Bilene area their home. The rest of the day can be spent familiarizing yourself with the local fisherman and maybe even going prawning with them. This is an excellent time to immerse yourself in their culture and to get to know how the locals live. There is a local market where you can find an assortment of curios, and taking a walk around town is a must. In the evening we enjoy a Fish Barbecue.

  • Meals :  Breakfast, Dinner
  • Accommodation camping : Tent
  • Accommodation chalet : Lodge

Day 3 : Morrungulo

Leaving the inland lakes of Bilene behind us, we make our way further north through the towns of Xai Xai and Maxixe (where inland lakes add to the beauty of the area) and on through the coconut plantations to the tropical beaches of Morrungulo. A late afternoon swim in the warm Indian Ocean is a must.

The road continues north from here, where the coconut trees take up most of the space in this once forgotten country. We make our way up to the Bazaruto Archipelago, where the islands give you a feeling once only experienced by the explorers of the past. The days here are spent in the fresh air on the beaches of Vilankulo. A Dhow trip out to one of the islands will be organized for a day. Snorkeling at one of the reefs in the area is a must, with its many species of fish, and, at times, the Green and Leather-Back Turtles and Manta Rays. Fresh seafood and catch of the day are one of the attractions of this area. Dugongs (Manatees) and Flamingoes are also seen at certain times of the year in the waters of the archipelago.
