Discover the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is large pulsing wetland formed by the mighty Okavango river that flows into the harsh continental landmass of the Kalahari Desert.  This results in a myriad of waterways that flood the plains of the Kalahari. Some areas are permanently flooded and other areas are seasonally flooded.

The Delta consists of a myriad of water channels, smaller tributaries and lagoons. Termite mounds rise up to form small islands among the constantly changing water ways. There are many interacting factors at play in the ecology and topography of the Okavango Delta. These include seasonal flooding, vegetation growth, sedimentary movements as well as the bulldozing actions of hippopotami carving out new channels.

The Okavango river flows from the Angolan highlands across the Caprivi Strip in Namibia and into the Kalahari Desert. The river does not flow into the sea but ends it journey in the sands of the Kalahari, where it transforms the arid earth into a pulsing oasis. Most of the flood waters reach the Delta between March and June which is generally known as the dry season.
